On Als there are numerous historical monuments and sights, including some of the most famous castles and mills in Denmark. For example, in Augustenborg Castle from around 1770, a permanent exhibition tells of the dramatic history of the castle and the Augustenburg ducal family. The beautiful castle park and the ornate castle church can also be visited. In Sønderborg, several exhibitions at Sønderborg Castle tell of the turbulent history of southern Jutland under alternating Danish and German sovereignty. In the harbor of Sønderborg the many sailing ships and restaurants contribute to a cozy atmosphere and in Sønderborg you can also shop well.
